Phillip Bahakel was born in Kingsport, TN June 26, 1954. He is the third child, (oldest son), and shared his home with 7 other siblings, 5 sisters and 2 brothers. During his youth, Phillip and his family lived in Southside and West End.
Phillip's mom and dad were hard-working, loving parents. During his high school years, Phillip worked to help provide for his family, too. (He rode a bus from his home to W.T. Grant's where he worked as a porter). He received his monies for college through financial aid and working at fast food restaurants. He also worked as a night auditor and as a desk manager at a local hotel while in law school.
Phillip attended grammar school at St. Paul's. He attended John Carroll High School and the University of Alabama where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in special studies in human development. He finished law school at the Cumberland School of Law (Samford University) in 1981.
During his education, Phillip actively participated in debate, both as a team member and as a debate coach.
Phillip took the Family Court bench as a District Court Judge in 2001 and served the citizens as a Family Court judge until 2007. He re-entered private practice, then realized that politics was playing too great a role in our domestic court.
Phillip is an active member at St. Elias Church.
Phillip was married for 19 years (he has been divorced over for 10 years). His children are still actively involved with both parents.
He has served on numerous boards to include the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the Exceptional Foundation and the USBC. He is an avid bowler and enjoys taking his daughters bowling.
