Phillip Bahakel is involved in many community events and organizations. He has served on the boards of these organizations, including the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the Exceptional Foundation and the USBC.

Phillip is the father and custodian of a special needs child. He understands the needs of the family in this respect. He also is sensitive of the urgency to care for those that cannot take care of themselves, the children.
When Phillip was on the bench at Family Court, it was not unusual for him to hear Family Court matters through lunch time and after 5:00. When he worked after five, he would have food in a small refrigerator in his chambers so that he could feed dinner to his special needs daughter. She would also stay busy putting together puzzles and doing other educational activities while her dad was on the bench finishing court matters. On the weekends, when his daughter would visit her mother, stepfather and half-sister, it was not uncommon to see Judge Bahakel at Family Court reviewing files and preparing orders.
